CBD, THC, ETC: Talking Cannabis

Raise your hand high if you have been wishing for marijuana to be used for medicinal purposes in the US for years? Who is holding them up with me?

I actually didn't vote too much in my younger years (no hate letters please) but when I moved down to FL years ago, I made sure to walk down to the middle school with my double stroller and vote YES to number 2 on the sheet which was to approve the use of cannabis for medical use. I had read a lot about it beforehand and being in the natural granola-loving vegan world for so long, knew it could help with a ton of ailments, including the one I had been battling since I was five - epilepsy.

I wanted to speak briefly today about the benefits of this plant, as well as my personal experience on the products I use. I hope you can be open minded about it. If you are, it could change the life of someone you know! I understand the CBD market is saturated, so it is also important to do your homework on where yours is being sourced, what else it contains behind the oil, etc.

First, some facts. There are two different species in the same family. When people hear "cannabis" or "hemp" they automatically think "marijuana" BUT that is not true. A mentor of mine pointed it out like this. Cannabis is a category of plants such as hemp or marijuana, just like "citrus" is a category of trees such as "orange" or "lemon".

MARIJUANA: If your state is one that is approved for the use of medical marijuana, you may want to consider speaking to an MD who prescribes it for the ailments below. When I spoke to my neurologist, I was very clear that I was raising two boys and working as a health coach and could not be high all day long. Because of the top grade oil, we chose a solution that worked so the oil I take sublingually does not affect me psychedelically at all. It has allowed me to get off the toxic medication I was on COMPLETELY.

HEMP: Now the information I can give you about hemp is only based on the one I use, just like the medical marijuana. I only recommend to my people what I use myself! The oil I use for overall gut and brain health is called HempGBX (link on my fave resources page) and it is a full spectrum hemp oil. Simply put, it contains all the beneficial phytocannabinoids along with ingredients that activate and improve the bioactivity of those nutrients. It is meant to rebalance all the pathways of our endocannabinoid system.

The biggest difference between these two plants is the level of THC, the psychoactive compound. Hemp usually has less than 0.3% and marijuana has greater than that.

So what do you need? That is where you talk to your doctor. For me, epilepsy is a disorder that needs the THC component. But by taking both, I am giving me vagus nerve everything it needs to fire at its best!

Below is a list of just some of the benefits of using medical cannabis:

  • Nerve Pain

  • Pain from Cancer and Treatments

  • Arthritis

  • Inflammation

  • Anxiety and Emotional Distress

  • Seizures

  • Glaucoma

  • Opioid Rehabilitation

  • Sleep

I had what seemed like hundreds of questions when I first made the decision to use this form of medicine and started the process. I hope this post clears up some main confusion (there is quite a lot of conflicting info out there), but I always encourage you to talk to the professionals. If you are local, I have listed my personal resources below.

I would love to hear from you all about your questions, hopes, worries or experience with medical cannabis!
